Jakarta’s traditional markets in bad shape

Sixty of Jakarta’s 153 traditional markets are in bad shape, according to city-owned traditional market operator PD Pasar Jaya.

Pasar Jaya director Djangga Lubis said on Monday that buildings housing the traditional markets had fallen into disrepair.

Most of the rundown markets were built in the 1980s and were predominantly located in North Jakarta, Djangga said.

According to Pasar Jaya’s reports, many of the dilapidated building’s roofs had given way and faulty plumbing had led to indoor floods at the markets, Djangga said.

Pasar Jaya has earmarked Rp 17 billion (US$1.8 million) for the renovation of 13 traditional markets in 2011, including Pasar Pademangan, West Jakarta; Pasar Pondok Bambu, East Jakarta; Pasar Mayestik, South Jakarta; and Pasar Luar Batang and Pasar Koja in North Jakarta.

A preponderance of convenience stores and modern supermarkets has encroached on traditional markets in recent years.

The central government earmarked Rp 30 billion to renovate 30 traditional markets nationwide in 2011, a sharp decline from Rp 250 billion allocated to renovate 400 markets in 2009.
