Sofyan, a lecturer of Al Asyariah Mandar University (Unasman) in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi, who was shot during a clash between the university and the police, died Monday in the Dr Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar.

“His condition started deteriorating at 10 a.m. and he died at around 11:30 a.m.,” said Ardina, Sofyan’s wife.

The clash between the police and the students, lecturers and staff of Unasman occurred last month when the police went to the university to assist in a land claim after a prolonged dispute concerning the land on which the university stood.

The district court ruled in favor of the Darul Dakwah Wal Irsyad (DDI) group, but the university opposed the ruling.

Sofyan was shot in the neck, causing permanent paralysis. He had undergone several operations since hospitalization.

Jasmin Ambas, one of the lecturers, said the university would keep demanding that the shooter be processed in accordance with the law.
