Officials tackle malnutrition with aid packages

The Batanghari regency administration said it had allocated funds to help curb the prevalence of malnutrition.

Batanghari Health Agency head Andi Amir said that under the aid program, the agency would give recipients daily nutrition packages worth Rp 25,000 (US$2.67) for three months.

“If we gave them cash, they might spend it on something else,” Andi said.

The aid will be channeled through community health centers in areas with high rates of malnutrition.

There were 50 reported cases of malnutrition in the regency between 2008 and 2010, with most in Marosebo Ulu and Bathin districts.

Andi said the agency had not received any reports of malnutrition so far this year. — JP
