The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Tengku Azmun Jaafar, the regent of Pelalawan, Riau, from 2001 to 2006, who was found guilty of corruption leading to illegal logging in his region.
The court upheld Tengku's 11 years' prison sentence and Rp 500 million (US$56,000) fine or an extra six months' imprisonment as well as Rp 12.36 billion in restitution, Kontan.co.id reported.
Azmun was found guilty of involvement in issuing the Yearly Plan (RKT), which enabled 15 companies to obtain permits to utilize the forest in Pelalawan.
The move resulted in forest degradation and state losses of Rp 1.28 trillion.
