ozens of the city’s transvestites will provide free hair-styling and hair-cut services on Valentine’s Day in an effort to reduce stigmas associated with their community.
Organized by Yayasan GAYa Dewata, a local NGO focused on gay rights, the event will be held at Museum Bali east of the Puputan Badung soccer field. It will take place from morning until noon.
“We hope that people will get to know us and our skills as hair-stylists and beauticians through this event,” transvestite Susan said.
Owner of a beauty parlor, Susan said that being a transvestite is not easy. Many transvestites have suffered social isolation, discrimination and even violence because they are different from the “normal” majority.
“Many fled their homes and because they didn’t have any skills and they eventually ended up on the streets,” GAYa Dewata director Chriatian Supriyadinata said. — JP
