Jakarta may stop funding soccer clubs
The Jakarta administration says it may stop funding the city's two soccer clubs, Persija and Persitara.
Jakarta administration secretary Fajar Panjaitan said on Saturday in the capital that the city wanted the two clubs to be more independent, as called for by Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi in Januray.
"We're presently trying to find a solution for this matter. We want to fulfill the [minister's] call. However will the soccer teams be able to operate without financial support during this transitional period?" Fajar said as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the administration would disburse Rp 20 billion (US$2.26 million) in previously allocated funds to the clubs in 2011 during the transitional period.
Gamawan called on regional administrations to stop funding local soccer teams after 2012.
