Gerindra sways toward opposing House tax inquiry

The Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) indicated it will likely oppose an initiative by the House of Representatives to conduct an inquiry into corruption in the Indonesia’s taxation system, in a decision to be confirmed at a plenary session on Tuesday morning.
“There is possibility [we] refuse [the tax inquiry proposal]. But we will decide on our final [stance] this morning after we gather 26 faction members to listen to each of their opinions,” House Gerindra deputy chairman Ahmad Muzani said Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Ahmad’s latest statement echoes his skepticism toward the proposal on Monday, when he doubt the effectiveness of such an inquiry, given the apparent failure of the House inquiry into the Bank Century bailout.
Gerindra, in addition to the National Development Party (PPP), has yet to finalize its take on the proposal, which will be discussed at a plenary session on Tuesday.
Currently, four parties, with a total of 274 seats, have voice support for the proposal. The remaining three, with a total of 222 seats, have voted against it.
