The Finance Ministry said Thursday it had punished 17 officials at the ministry for their involvement in graft convict Gayus Tambunan’s tax scandal.

Seven of them had been fired, some were temporarily dismissed and some were demoted, an expert staff for state revenue at the ministry, Robert Pakpahan, said in Jakarta, kompas.com reported.

He added that some of the cases had been transferred to the police for further legal processing.

Asked about the positions, Robert said they were echelon II and II.

He said that the ministry might take action against more officials for similar offenses.
