he rise in cocoa prices has brought a windfall to farmers in Central Sulawesi, according to the Indonesian Cocoa Association (Askindo).
Askindo secretary Muhammad Rusdy said farmers should be able to tap the encouraging market by increasing production.
“This is good momentum for the farmers to be more productive,” he told The Jakarta Post in Palu over the weekend.
According to Rusdy, the price hike in cocoa was triggered by Cote d’Ivoire President Allasane Quattara’s policy banning exporting cocoa overseas. He said the price on the international market reached US$3,608 per metric ton, which appeared to be the highest in the last 32 years. — JP
