More clues needed in fire engine graft case: Former convict

A- A A+

Recently released graft convict and former high official Oentarto Sindung Mawardi said Indonesia's corruption watchdog could investigate his case further, despite the death of a key player in it.

Oentarto, the former director general for regional autonomy at the Home Ministry, strongly hinted at the involvement of his then superior, former home minister Hari Sabarno.

Oentarto was convicted in a corruption case involving the procurement of fire trucks. The case allegedly cost the state Rp 76 billion (US$8.58 million) in losses. Hari was also recently declared a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Another convict in the case was Hengky Samuel Daud, who owned PT Istana Sarana Raya, which provided the fire engines.

However, Hengky died in June last year, while serving his sentence. Oentarto said the KPK could dig deeper for clues indicating Hari's involvement -- from other sources such as Hengky's wife.

"The one who knows [about the procurement] is the State Audit Agency [BPK]," Oentarto said Sunday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
