Gorontalo working to develop transgenic maize

A- A A+

Gorontalo province is currently working to develop genetically modified transgenic corn, among efforts to increase agricultural production.

“Transgenic corn is produced from genetically modified seeds. The traits that have been engineered into the seeds include resistance to insect pests and pesticides,” Gorontalo Corn Information Center chief Muljady D. Mario said Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Transgenic corn plants also have higher productivity than locally produced corn. One hectare of transgenic corn plants can produce 12 to 15 tons of corn, while conventional local corn plants produce 3 to 4 tons.

“The cost for cultivation of transgenic maize is also lower because this plant is resistant to pests and pesticides,” Muljady said.

The province, he said, had proposed the issuance of permits for transgenic maize cultivation in the area to the National Biosafety Board and the National Commission for the Environment.

Once such a permit is issued, the province will immediately work with the Gorontalo State University to commence a trial cultivation project using the plant.
