Prosecutors in Gayus-related case appeal light sentences

Prosecutors from South Jakarta District Court are appealing Humala Napitupulu’s and Maruli Pandapotan Manurung’s sentences for being too light.

South Jakarta District Court head M Yusuf said the appeals were filed because the sentences were less than two-thirds of what prosecutors had demanded.

“Maruli's was half [what was asked for],” he said Wednesday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

He said prosecutors were also appealing Humala’s sentence for the same reason.

Both Humala and Maruli are associates or former associates of infamous graft convict Gayus H. Tambunan. Maruli was Gayus’s superior in the tax objection division at the tax office.

Prosecutors had asked that Humala be sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and Maruli five years.

They were charged with mismanaging the tax objections of PT Surya Alam Tunggal and causing Rp 570 million (US$64,980) in losses for the nation.
