RI backs Timor Leste for ASEAN membership

Indonesia, chair of this year’s ASEAN, pledged to support membership of Timor Leste with ASEAN.

The promise was made by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a bilateral meeting with a delegation from Timor Leste, headed by its Foreign Minister, Zacarias Albano da Costa, on Thursday.

“Indonesia will fully support the membership of Timor Leste with ASEAN and will use its leadership to realize it,” presidential spokesman Teuku Faizasya told a press briefing after the meeting.

President Yudhoyono and his counterpart from Timor Leste Xanana Gusmao is slated to hold a high-level meeting in Jakarta on March 22 to discuss the bilateral affairs of the two countries.

Zacarious is in Jakarta for a two-day joint ministerial commission meeting to discuss among others border issues between the two nations.
