The parents of eight-month old Maureen, whose fingers atrophied following a medical procedure at the Awal Bros Hospital, has reported the doctor who tended to their daughter to the Jakarta police.
“We have reported [the doctor] to the Jakarta Police, who then proceeded the case to the Tangerang police,” Maureen's mother, Linda Kurniawati, said.
She added that she had trouble contacting the doctor who had handled her daughter.
“He previously cared so much about Maureen...[we] always called for consultations. Now our calls are never answered and it seems that the number has been changed,” she said.
The hospital has not yet taken responsibility or admitted negligence over the incident.
“They only said that it was the risk of the procedure and the consequence was beyond prediction. It’s so easy [for them] to say,” she said, as reported by kompas.com.
In November 2010, Maureen was given an intravenous drip which caused her hand to swell and ulcers to form. Plastic surgeons performed a surgery to remove the ulcers. However, the fingers on the right hand continued to shrink until the little finger removed by itself last December.
