Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad says his ministry will work with retail chain Carrefour to promote and market fisheries products.

Fadel said cooperation was necessary to guarantee public access to inexpensive and fresh fisheries products.

“Carrefour can become our strategic partner thanks to its extensive logistics network and strong distribution chains, to support the distribution of fisheries products across the archipelago,” Fadel said Tuesday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

PT Carrefour Indonesia president director Shafie Shamsuddin said his company had launched a program known as "Farmer and Fishermen Week" to promote local produce including fish, vegetables and meat.

The local products campaign runs from March 2 to 15, and covers 81 outlets and involves 37 suppliers.

According to a data from the ministry, the average Indonesian consumed 30.47 kilograms of fish last year, an increase of 4.78 percent compared to 2009.

The ministry is targeting to increase fish consumption to 38.67 kg by 2014.
