Dozens of students have protested a plan to develop an oil palm plantation in Melawai, West Sumatra, saying it is not what local people want or need.

The protesters made a speech in front of the West Sumatra legislature and administration office.

Students’ spokesman Pinda Simanjuntak said the plan would convert 93,000 hectares of land into plantation.

“There will be only 20,000 hectares of land left for residents,” Pinda said Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.
