The Indonesian government has expressed its sympathy on Thursday’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan that killed more than 300 people, the foreign ministry says.

“The government of Indonesia expresses its sincere condolence and heartfelt sympathy on those who died and those injured in the calamity and devastation,” the ministry said in a press statement on Saturday.

The ministry said that the government and the Indonesian people could feel the deep sorrow now shrouding the people of Japan.

"We, the Indonesian government and people, however, believe that the Japanese government and the people have the resilience and capability to cope with such a difficult situation,” it said.

It added that the Indonesian government would be ready to help the Japanese government to speed up the relief and recovery efforts if requested.
