No more space in C. Jakarta cemeteries

JAKARTA: Central Jakarta, the smallest municipality in the city, has no more space for new cemetery plots as both the population and office construction activity continue to increase.

“We cannot dig new graves as all space has been used up,” Central Jakarta Burial Service Agency head Leofold Pasaribu said Friday

Leofold said the municipal administration was offering the stack burial method, which is limited to members of the same family. Another option is burying bodies in other graves after leases had expired and were not renewed.

The four cemeteries already full in Central Jakarta are the 16-hectare Karet Bivak Cemetery, one-hectare Petamburan Cemetery, 6.8-hectare Karet Pasar Baru Cemetery and the 4.9-hectare Kawi-kawi Cemetery. — JP
