Tsunami destroys houses in Jayapura
Waves generated from the tsunami originating Friday off Japan reached Jayapura, causing destruction to houses standing along the coast of Holtekamp resort beach in Muara Tami district on Saturday.
In addition to houses, including a traditional Papuan house known as “honai”, the waves also dragged dozens of fishing boats and nets as far as 50 meters from the Holtekamp beach line, Antara news service reported.
The waves, reportedly measuring two meters in height, pounded the area for one hour, starting from 11 p.m. local time.
As many as 19 families lost their homes. However, most residents had evacuated to safer areas.
It was previously reported that one local, Darwanto Odang, died after being swept away by waves after falling off his motorcycle.
His body was found trapped between debris 50 meters from where he was swept away, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.
