More than 2,000 teachers without permanent employment status in Kendal, Central Java, may lose their jobs following a ministerial decree on school aid spending.
SMPN 1 Limbangan State Junior High School principal Esti Setyorini said Tuesday that 1,411 elementary school teachers and 771 junior high school teachers would be affected by the decree, kompas.com reported.
Esti referred to the National Education Ministry's Decree No. 37/2010 on technical guidance for School Operational Aid (BOS) 2011 spending. The decree stipulates that a school is only allowed to spend 15 percent of BOS aid on its employees, while schools currently generally spend 30 percent.
SMPN 1 Limbangan has 10 teachers without permanent employment status, Esti said. She said if the decree was implemented the school would not be able to pay them.
Singorojo district education office head Sri Yulianti said the decree would affect the quality of education in schools.
