Tourists visiting Borobudur Temple in Central Java are now obliged to wear batik sarongs when they enter the temple.

Pujo Suwarno, PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur (TWCB) general manager, said that the company had prepared 10,000 sarongs for visitors.

He said the program was aimed at preserving and increasing the appreciation of the Borobudur Temple as cultural heritage.

Tourists are expected to begin using sarongs at a post located at the bottom of the temples' entrance stairs before taking them off at an exit post.

“The concept of wearing sarongs inside the temple is also a tourist attraction, so we implemented [the policy],” Pujo said Tuesday as quoted by Antara.

The sarong policy implementation coincides with the implementation of another in which visitors – of groups of 30 – must be accompanied by TWCB staff members.
“All measures aid the effort to preserve the temple,” Pujo added.
