The left hand of a police officer who had attempted to defuse a bomb on Tuesday has been amputated, a plastic surgeon at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Jakarta said Wednesday.

An amputation procedure was conducted on Comr. Dodi Rahmawan’s left forearm on Tuesday afternoon by surgeon Aditya Wardhana and an orthopedic surgery specialist, Aditya told tempointeraktif.com over the phone.

“The operation did not take long and it went well,” he said.

Dodi, the head of East Jakarta Police detective unit, is still under treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.

The book bomb, sent to the Utan Kayu Community in East Jakarta on Tuesday, was addressed to Ulil Abshar Abdhalla, a liberal Muslim figure and Democratic Party politician.
