Wiretapping by BIN without court permission a violation of human rights: House speaker

House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie said that he objected to giving intelligence officers the authority to implement wiretaps without first gaining permission from the court.

“That violates human rights. I don’t agree with it,” he said Tuesday, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

The draft for the intelligence bill allows the National Intelligence Agency  (BIN) to wiretap communication, electronic documents and investigate transactions suspected of being related to acts of terrorism, separatism, espionage, subversion, sabotage, or other activities threatening national security.

Marzuki said that wiretapping procedures should first obtain permission from the court or any other mechanism.”
He added that wiretapping mechanisms were often misused.

“If someone hates another, [they] will be continuously wiretapped. The nation will be ruined then. Our freedom as citizens will no longer exist. Power tends to corrupt. That’s certain,” he said.
