Police have reportedly named a suspect the uncle of a boy whose foot was crushed in a Jakarta mall escalator in 2009.

North Jakarta Police chief Snr.Comr. Andap Budhi said Pardi, 17, should be held responsible for the injury to Rio Aliansyah Ramadhan at Pasar Pagi Mangga Dua mall in May 2009, tempointeraktif.com reported Wednesday.

A lawyer for Rio ’s family, David Tobing, said they were shocked upon receiving a summons from police on Monday which stated that Pardi had been named a suspect. He accused police of engineering the case against him.

Rio and Pardi were coming down the escalator hand in hand from the fourth floor of the mall when suddenly Rio's foot was caught.

Rio ’s family sued the mall management and the company that produces and maintains the escalators, but after more than a year, Central Jakarta District Court last week turned down the suit.
