Constitutional Court Chief Mahfud M.D. said Thursday he did not believe the report that a number of retired generals planned to topple President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
“I do not believe the issue. When I was defense minister I knew the facts,” Mahfud said as quoted by tribunnews.com. “I met the retired generals regularly, but none thought to topple the government.”
He said a regular discussion that took place in a house of a retired general, Luhut Panjaitan, only concluded that former generals were disappointed in the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
However, the retired generals were committed to guarding the government until the end of its tenure in 2014.
Al-Jazeera TV station has reported that retired generals have backed Islamic hardliners to topple the government.
