RI's Wika facing Libyan mall project cancellation

State-owned construction firm PT Wijaya Karya (Wika) is facing the potential cancellation of its shopping center project in Libya as the situation in the country devolves.

“We may have to cancel it because the situation there doesn't allow us to continue our work,” Wika corporate secretary Natal Agriawan said Tuesday in Jakarta.

Wika was working on a multi-story shopping center when the conflict in Libya erupted, forcing some of its 200 workers to be sent home to Indonesia and the others to be moved to Algeria to work on a Wika project there.

The publicly-listed company is responsible for 70 percent of the Libyan shopping center worth Rp 107 billion (US$12.3 million). The remaining 30 percent is held by a partner company.

“So far, there is no confirmation from them regarding whether or not it is possible to continue the construction project,” Natal said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
