Jakarta coping with larger workforce: Fauzi

Jakarta’s Governor says the administration reducing poverty and unemployment in 2010, despite an increasing number of people looking for work.

“Thanks to an increase in job vacancies, the increase in the workforce could be managed,” Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said on Tuesday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The population of Jakarta was 9.59 million in 2010, reflecting a growth rate of 1.4 percent, up from 0.78 percent in 2009, Fauzi said, quoting Bureau of Central Statistics census data.

Despite an increase in the city’s workforce to 5.27 million in 2010, up from 4.69 million in 2009, Fauzi said the administration decreased unemployment in Jakarta to 11.05 percent in 2010from 15 percent in 2009.

The number of poor people in the city was 312,200 in 2010, down from 323,200 in 2009, Fauzi said.
