Isak Dapalawi, 18, a pencak silat (traditional martial arts) athlete, died in Gubeng Klingsingan, Surabaya, on Tuesday, reportedly after receiving “physical punishment” from his coach for skipping classes.
Autopsy results show that Isak's neck was broken.
“We're still questioning the witnesses, including the coach. We haven't yet named anyone as a suspect,” Gubeng Police chief Comr. Gusti Agung Dana told reporters on Wednesday.
Gusti said Isak was attending a training session at Hoki court on Jalan Darmawangsa, Surabaya, on Tuesday when his coach enacted “physical punishment” for skipping three previous training sessions.
It's not clear yet, however, what kind of physical punishment exactly was imposed on Isak.
“It was while carrying out the punishment that the victim went limp and then lost consciousness before being admitted to hospital. Unfortunately, he could not be saved as he drew his last breath during the trip [to hospital],” Gusti added as quoted by Antara.
