2 men, 2 women caned in
Indonesia for sex offenses

Two men and two women have been caned in public for sex offenses in a conservative province of Muslim majority Indonesia.

The four were flogged in front of dozens of worshippers outside a mosque after Friday prayers in Aceh Besar district of Aceh province. Indonesia has a policy of secularism but has allowed highly conservative Aceh province to implement a version of Sharia law.

Local prosecutor Bendry Almy said a man and a woman married to other people were canned nine times each for adultery.

Another man was caned seven times for taking a picture of a 18-year-old woman wearing transparent clothes. Almy said the teenager in the picture was caned four times.
