Aggrieved family to file civil lawsuit against Citibank

The family of Irzen Octa, a Citibank customer who died in one of the bank’s branches allegedly after complaining about his credit card bill, has announced plans to file a civil suit against the bank.

“I will file a civil suit, asking for compensation. What will be the fate of [Irzen’s] child?” O.C Kaligis, the lawyer representing Irzen’s family, said Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that the lawsuit would be submitted to Central Jakarta District Court this week.

The move to file a civil lawsuit was taken after Citibank failed to respond to a previous lawsuit, Kaligis said.

“We filed a lawsuit without an answer. This means [Citibank] confirms,” he said.

Irzen Octa was found fainting in a Citibank branch in the Menara Jamsostek building, South Jakarta, after he protested what he thought was an inflated credit card bill. He was reportedly died on the way to the hospital. His death was suspected to have been caused by aggressive debt collectors as police have currently detained three officers relating to the case.

Kaligis declined to elaborate on the amount of compensation the family hoped to gain from the suit.
