Indonesia has become the world second largest market for narcotics after
Japan, due in part to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, a top
customs official says
"Narcotic smugglers are now coming this way
as they've noticed a huge potential in this country," Soekarno Hatta
customs office monitoring chief Gatot Sugeng Wibowo said recently as
quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Customs officials recently
arrested one Iranian and two Indonesians and confiscated 17.9 kilograms
of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 36 billion hidden in furniture at the
Tanjung Priok port.
Separately, National Narcotics Agency (BNN)
spokesman Sumirat Dwiyanto said that the list of narcotics smuggled into
Indonesia was topped by marijuana, crystal methamphetamine and Ecstasy.
