Indonesians lose title hopes at Batam Open

I

ndonesia lost its title hopes at the second Batam Open Asia-Pacific Beach Volleyball Tournament 2011 after all of the country’s teams were outclassed during Round 16 and the quarterfinals at Turi Beach, Nongsa, Batam, on Friday.

The last team to hope for, I Wayan Indrwan and Muhammad Bastomi, failed to handle Ben O’dea and Sam O’dea of New Zealand, falling to a 21-17, 12-21, 8-15 loss.

Last year’s winner, Andy Ardiansyah, with his new young partner Fahriansyah, lost to Hilal Al Maqbali and Bader Al Subhi of Oman, at a risk of being the latter’s mentor in a 21-16, 13-21, 14-16 rubber in Round 16.

Andy and Fahriansyah was Indonesia’s most hopeful team after being seeded third in the event, while Oman’s second team was seeded last.

“They got us. We failed to maintain our patience and they recognized our flaws,” Andy said after the match, adding that his young partner was too pushy.

Al Makbali and Al Subhi are both senior players with experience and skill equal to Andy and his usual partner, Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro.

“I think Fahriansyah has learned his lesson,” he added.

Indonesian men’s team coach Agus Abdul Karim said that the loss of Andy and Fahriansyah was unpredicted. However, it would take more time for Fahriansyah and other young talents to settle with their new partners, he added.

“Playing in tournaments is one of the ways to produce great athletes for regeneration, especially to layer Andy and Koko,” he said.

Dian Putra Santosa and I Putu Juniarta also bowed down against top seeds Alexandr Dyachenko and Sidorenko Alexey of Kazakhstan 21-14, 21-9. In the women’s division, hopeful sixth seed Ayu Cahyaning Siam and Yokbeth Manisala Kapasiang were upset by 10th seed Ma Yuanyuan and Ding Jingjing of China 21-14, 21-8.

“They played much better than us and seemed ready to tackle whatever moves we made,” said Yokbeth, who is also playing indoor volleyball for a national league. Yokbeth said that she had paired with Ayu since the Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman, last December.

“It has been awhile [since Muscat] and it affected our performance. It was hard to switch from indoor volleyball’s style to beach volleyball. We need to fix a lot of things,” she said.

Earlier in the day, second team Fitri Wijayanti and Dhita Juliana, sixth seed in the tourney, were also ousted by Malaysians Beh Shun Ting and Luik Teck Hua with a 21-11, 20-22, 15-9 defeat.

In Thursday’s qualification round, Andy and Fahriansyah led Pool C on the men’s side after beating Henry Pecana and Arnel Amadeo of the Philippines (21-13, 22-20) as well as Owen Boland and Damien Schumann of Australia (25-23, 22-20).

Meanwhile, Ayu and Yokbeth led Pool F and Fitri and Dhita led Pool E.

On the men’s side, Alexandr and Alexey of Kazakhstan and the O’dea Brothers are the challengers to beat, especially for the host teams. Top seeds Tsimbalova Irina and Mashkova Tatyana and China’s teams are also tough competitors in women’s play.
