Jakarta’s car-free Sunday to run until noon

Jakarta will hold a car-free day on Jl Sudirman and Jl Thamrin from morning until midday on Sunday.

Fast lanes along those streets would be closed and private and public cars allowed to travel along regular traffic lanes only, according to the Jakarta Traffic Management Center.

The TransJakarta busway would operate as usual.

Sunday’s car-free day will coincide with 2011 Urbanathlon, which is expected to draw 1,500 participants. Residents usually take advantage of car-free days by cycling, jogging or holding community events.

According to the Traffic Management Center’s website, traffic was light along the toll road to Cawang, South Jakarta, heading towards both Bekasi and Pancoran, South Jakarta.
