Three new political parties have registered with the Law and Human Rights Ministry to run in the 2014 general elections since registration was opened in January, an official says.

The ministry's state administration director Asyarie Syihabudin said on Monday that the three parties were the Nasdem Party, the National Republic Party, and the National Union Party (PPN).

“They are still obliged to complete some required documents by August 22,” he said.

All registered parties, both new and old must be verified before they can participate in the elections. The verification process will commence in August, Asyarie added.

The National Democrats, a fast-growing mass organization founded by Surya Paloh, a former Golkar Party member and media mogul, has also been known to use the abbreviation Nasdem.

However, the mass-organization’s secretary-general, Syamsul Muarif, said the Nasdem Party had nothing to do with his organization.

“The party might have been formed by members of our organization. But the National Democrats never officially decided to become a political party. That was a decision made in our latest national executive meeting,” Syamsul said.
