State insurance firm PT Jasa Raharja will pay a Rp 50 million (US$5,850) premium for the families of each of the 27 dead victims of last week’s Merpati plane crash in West Papua.

The company has prepared Rp 1.35 billion in total to pay for the premiums, Papua Jasa Raharja office branch spokesman Artaban said Monday in Jayapura.

“The funds total Rp 1.35 billion, with each victim receiving a Rp 50 million premium,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Artaban added that the money would be paid in cash to the heirs of each victim.

“If the heirs live in Sorong and Kaimana, we will deliver the payment directly. But if they reside outside Papua, data and files on the victims will be sent to Jasa Raharja office branches where they [the heirs] reside,” he said.

A Merpati Nusantara Airlines MA 60 airplane with 27 people on board crashed into the sea near Utarung Kaimana Airport in West Papua on Saturday. No one is believed to have survived.
