KPK remains clueless on Nunun's whereabouts

A- A A+

Nunun Nurbaeti, the most-wanted person implicated in the high-profile bribery case surrounding the election of the central bank’s senior deputy governor in 2004 that has implicated at least 29 former and current lawmakers, was named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), despite the fact that the KPK remained clueless as to where she currently was.

“We do not yet know where Nunun is. If we had known she was in Singapore all this time, we would have definitely brought her in for questioning firsthand,” KPK spokesperson Johan Budi told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

A similar statement also was given by KPK chairman Busyro Muqqodas during a meeting with the House of Representatives earlier the same day, in which the KPK officially named Nunun a suspect. Busyro stated that his office was currently making efforts to extradite her back to Indonesia, but declined to disclose Nunun’s current whereabouts.

Nunun, a.k.a “the cashier”, is suspected of distributing Rp 24 billion (US$2.81 million) in bribes in traveler’s checks to legislators for their support in voting for Miranda Swaray Goeltom as Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor.

The wife of former National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Adang Daradjatun was reportedly in Singapore receiving medical treatment for her "severe forgetfulness", after she had been missing since March last year when she failed to respond to her first subpoena to testify against the convicted Dudhie Makmun Murod, a politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Nunun further failed to appear for KPK questioning all but once earlier last year. Her lawyer, Ina Rachman, claimed that Nunun fled to Singapore in February last year, and the KPK simply slapped her with a travel ban on March, 24, 2010.

But rest assured, Johan added, the next step would definitely be to hunt for Nunun and present her for questioning at the KPK office in Jakarta.

Previously, most of the 25 lawmakers who were brought to trial condemned the KPK for failing to present Nunun before the courts.
