Legislator Ahmad Yani on Monday said Constitutional
Court (MK) chief Mahfud MD should have reported Democratic Party treasurer and
legislator M. Nazaruddin's attempt to bribe the court's secretary-general to
the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) before reporting it to the
President and announcing it publicly.
"Mahfud should have reported the case to the KPK
so it could have been processed further," Ahmad said at the House of
Representatives Commission III meeting room in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday.
A thorough investigation was needed to find out whether
an alleged attempted bribery took place, involving government and House
officials, he said.
"The House should be cleaned of illegal practices
and unlawful conduct," Ahmad said.
"This is an important step in restoring the
House's image."
KPK chief Busyro Muqoddas has said Mahfud had
contacted him by phone to talk about the case. However, no formal meeting took
place between the two, he said. (mim)
