Police detained six alleged members of the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII) movement, following raid on a house in Ungaran, Central Java, on Monday.
The movement and its members have been targeted by police in recent months after investigations revealed several NII members were involved in a spate of recent suspected terrorist activity, including a suicide bombing attack on a mosque and a series of mail bombs.
National Police deputy spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said one of the detained NII members had acted as a “governor” in the organization.
“One of [those arrested] with the initials TD, was allegedly the governor of NII’s Central Java wing," Boy said Tuesday, adding that the organization was divided into branches, similar to that of the state administration. NII had posts for ministers, governors and others, he said.
Another detainee was identified by the initial M, Boy said.
"M was found in the company of the others when the arrest took place."
However, Boy declined to elaborate on the identities of the detainees pending further investigations at Central Java Police Headquarters by investigators from the National Police detective unit and Central Java Police detective unit.
"The temporary results of our interrogations are that they were allegedly part of NII’s activities in Central Java, especially those taking place in district II," he said.
