Megawati criticizes nuclear plan

Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle Megawati Soekarnoputri criticized the government’s plan on Monday to build a nuclear power plant in Bangka Belitung province.

“I say, don’t even think about nuclear power plants yet. What if an earthquake occurs? What would the security process be? What happened in Japan is part of my consideration.” She said as quoted by Antara news agency.

She said that Indonesia still had an inadequate amount of nuclear experts for it to realize the plan.

Megawati added that Indonesians should learn from Japan on disaster preparedness.

Indonesians are quite alert when disaster strikes, but they tend to be reactive, she said.
