The National Police signed a memorandum of understanding with the Research and Technology Ministry on Wednesday to improve cooperation between both parties in the field of forensics.

According to National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, the MoU "symbolically outlined" the terms of the long-standing cooperation between both institutions.

"A specific area that we agreed [to improve upon] was on the matter of forensic investigations. The point is that police will receive assistance in the form of human resources and tools for [investigations]," Timur said after the signing ceremony at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta.

He added that the cooperation would be particularly useful in "tough investigations".

"We will [also] work with the ministry [to develop] bomb-defusing robots, since these are related to high technology," he said.

The National Police has recently been investigating several terrorism cases, including a series of mail bomb attacks and a suspected suicide bombing.
