Suspects implicated in the deadly drive by shooting of police officers in Palu, Central Sulawesi, last month, had loose ties to other terror suspects, and in one case a convict implicated in the 2002 Bali bombing, a police high official says.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said that one of the suspects, Hari Kuncoro, was on the wanted list for the 2002 Bali bombing.
"He facilitated the preparations in the first Bali bombing by accompanying Dulmatin in purchasing electronic equipment utilized in the first Bali bombing planning," he said on Tuesday.
Dulmatin is widely known as the mastermind of the bombing.
Hari was arrested together with another suspect, Sugeng Setiaji, in Pekalongan on June 9, Anton said.
He said that Hari knew Imam Samudera, Mukhlas, Amrozi, Dr. Azhari and Nurdin M. Too, all of whom were implicated in the first Bali bombing.
He said that Hari was involved in a military-style training camp on Buru Island where various trainings in the use of revolvers, explosives and self-defense were conducted.
"He was also involved in the Moro Islamic Liberation Front [MILF] in the Philippines. He also received various military training related to firing devices, explosives and repairing guns," he added.
He said that Hari went to Tawaw, Malaysia with Dulmatin and Maulana in 2003.
"They met Umar Patek and later participated in training in the Philippines," he added.
He said that evidence seized during the arrest included a 0.45 caliber pistol, four ammunition magazines and 33 rounds of 0.45 caliber ammunition.
