The Constitutional Court has issued a ruling in favor of Busyro Muqoddas, who it says should retain the position of chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission for the next four years.
The ruling thus allows Busyro to continue in his capacity as chairman without having to go through the recruitment process again.
Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD announced on Monday that the decision to defend Busyro's position was made out of concern for budget efficiency, "and to be in line with the existing law".
The ruling was issued in response to an earlier request filed by the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation and Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) over the KPK chairman's tenure as stipulated in the law on the KPK.
By law, the KPK chairman should serve a full four-year term, while Busyro was only initially appointed to serve as chairman for one year.
Busryo was appointed by the House of Representatives Commission III, to replace Antasari Azhar who was implicated in a murder case. Busyro took up the post in December 2010. (lfr)
