The committee for the seventh conference of the United Development Party (PPP) says four candidates have now registered to run for the position of party chairman in its upcoming congress in Bandung, West Java.

The candidates will compete for votes from around 1,180 party members taking part in the election.
The candidates are incumbent chairman Suryadharma Ali, PPP political affairs chief Ahmad Muqowan, PPP legal affairs chief Ahmad Yani, and Muchdi PR, the former deputy chairman of the Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) who recently moved to PPP.

“To become the [new] chairperson, a candidate must be skillful in garnering votes from the [regional and branch chapters],” congress coordinator Imron Pangkapi said.

The 37 members of the PPP central board have no votes, he said. This means there are a total of 860 votes up for grabs from regional chapters and 66 from branches, as well as five branches that have more than five seats in the Regional Representatives Council.
