SBY extends KPK chief's office term

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a decree extending the length of the office term of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Busyro Muqoddas from one year previously to four years.

The presidential decree thus annuls the 2010 decree ruling that Busyro, elected in December last year, would serve for only one year.

“The presidential decree was signed on Tuesday, June 28, 2011,” presidential expert staff for legal affairs Denny Indrayana said Thursday in Jakarta.

The President's move came following urges from the Judiciary Watchdog Coalition to soon issue a decree lengthening Busyro's term in office, after the Constitutional Court ruled that Busyro should lead the KPK for four years. His deputies, who were elected in 2007, also have four-year terms.

Busyro was elected KPK chief after the former chief, Antasari Azhar, was convicted in a murder case.
