A legislator says that former Democratic Party treasurer and corruption suspect Muhammad Nazaruddin will return to Indonesia before Ramadhan begins later this month.
“He just needs a security guarantee from the police,” Martin Hutabarat, a member of House Commission III overseeing legal affairs, said on Saturday as quoted by tribunnews.com
Meanwhile, the Indonesia Corruption Watch's (ICW) legal coordinator,Febridiansyah, dismissed concerns that giving Nazaruddin protection would be tantamount to giving the National Police control of the investigation over the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
“The KPK Law prohibits the police and prosecutors from taking over any cases handled by KPK,” he said.
Nazaruddin, previously named a suspect by the KPK in an alleged bribery scandal surrounding the construction of the athletes'dormitory for the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, South Sumatra, reportedly fled to Singapore the day before a ban on his overseas travel went into effect.
His current whereabouts are unknown.
