5.3-magnitude quake jolts Maluku
A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Saumlaki, the capital of West Maluku Tenggara, Maluku, early Sunday morning, with no casualties reported.
Ambon Geophysics Station head Benny Sipolo said the epicenter of the quake was 293 kilometers northwest of Saumlaki, 121 kilometers below sea level.
Benny said the quake did not trigger any tsunamis.
He also said Saumlaki was among the quake-prone areas in the region, adding, “Almost every day, an earthquake with a magnitude of between 2 and 3 on the Richter scale strikes the area,” as quoted by Antara news agency.
