East Java Deputy Governor Saifullah Yusuf has announced that nightlife businesses will be closed for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
Saifullah said the measure was being put in place out of respect to Muslims, who will be fasting during that month.
“It all depends on the local administration’s policy, but we will encourage regents and mayors in East Java to implement the ban,” he said Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
Saifullah was speaking on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the Indonesia-Middle East Update meeting, in Surabaya, East Java.
He also urged restaurant and cafe owners to show similar respect by either closing their businesses during daylight hours or by keeping their food out of sight.
