American fast-food chain Carl’s Jr. aims to open 25 outlets in Indonesia over the next six years, focusing mostly on Jakarta, Bandung and Bali.
“We will see the Indonesian market response to our products. If the response is good, we will likely open more outlets here,” said Carl’s Jr. Indonesia marketing director Chandra Firmanto at the opening ceremony of the chain’s fourth store at the Central Park mall in West Jakarta on Monday.
The company, Chandra said, targeted upper middle-class customers, particularly younger individuals.
“With the all-you-can-drink beverage bar and the convenience of partial table service — both first to the Indonesian quick service restaurant market, Carl’s Jr. restaurants are perfect places to hang-out,” he said.
Carl’s Jr. Indonesia’s operational director Henry Kwan said that Carl’s Jr. imported most of its raw materials.
“We have more than 3,000 outlets worldwide, so it would be a lot cheaper if we buy raw materials in a massive amount rather than if we buy less here,” Henry said, without elaborating on which particular products the company was buying from local suppliers.
At the new store opening, Carl’s Jr. also introduced a new menu item, the Big Carl Burger, which offers twice as much meat and cheese with two charbroiled beef patties on a toasted sesame seed bun.
“For customers who crave a delicious, bigger burger, the Big Carl Burger is the new answer and is available at all Carl’s Jr. restaurants from today [Monday],” Henry said.
Carl’s Jr. Indonesia opened its first restaurant in 2010. Its three other outlets are located at Jakarta’s Grand Indonesia, Emporium Pluit and La Piazza malls.
Carl’s Jr. is a wholly owned subsidiary of CKE Restaurants, Inc. of Carpinteria, California.
As of the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2011, CKE Restaurants, through its subsidiaries, has a total of 3,134 franchised, licensed or company-operated restaurants, of which 1,233 are Carl’s Jr. restaurants in 42 US states and 16 countries. (swd)
