New chairman vows clean leadership

acing mounting tasks of cleaning-up the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI), the newly elected chairman Djohar Arifin Husin hopes to start a clean leadership page by promising a transparent public audit of the national governing body’s financial status.

“We hope to obtain the trust from the nationwide soccer society and from businesspeople. So, we must start with being clean,” Djohar said at his first day on the job on Monday. “Trust is our main capital to be able to cooperate with any party.”

Djohar was speaking after a day-long meeting with his deputy Farid Rahman and eight of his executive committee members.

“We have decided to perform an audit by a public accountant on the PSSI financial administration so that we can start managing this organization from ground zero,” said Djohar, promising to invite the international auditor, who had the experience of auditing professional soccer clubs.

“All the funding that PSSI received and used must be transparent. The public must know PSSI’s assets, debts and cash flow,” said Djohar, adding that the auditing will be performed on a regular basis, within every six months to a year.

“If we find irregularities, we hope all to be responsible,” said the former player of PSMS Medan, who was once a District Manager for the province of North Sumatra, a general secretary of the Indonesia Olympic Council (KONI), as well as a previous member Youth and Sports Minister.

His most urgent tasks now also include ensuring the national senior soccer team’s 2014 World Cup Asian qualifier match against Turkmenistan on July 23 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan and on July 28 in Jakarta.

After discussing with the current head of the National Team Body (BTN) Iman Arif, Djohar said that the team would start training camp on July 14 and would depart to Turkmenistan on July 20.

Funding for the team’s training and departure to Turkmenistan will be covered from the funding commitments worth an overall Rp 9 billion (US$1.05 million) from the five state-own companies — Bukit Asam, Bank Mandiri, PT Telkom, Pertamina, and Semen Padang. “We hope to sign the MOU with those five companies as soon as possible,” said Djohar.

The training programs of the senior team and the U23 squad were stopped after the Youth and Sports Ministry postponed the flow of the Rp 50 billion due to conflict over chairmanship of the national soccer body.

“We will soon meet Youth and Sports Minister [Andi Mallarangeng] asking for the disbursement of the fund,” said Djohar, expecting that by next week the U23 team would began their training camp for SEA Games. The team is also scheduled for the U23 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup tournament from July 16-24 in Palembang, South Sumatra.
