PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will operate an additional 26 cars every day to compensate for anticipated higher passenger numbers during the upcoming Idul Fitri 2011.
“There are 24 additional cars from Jakarta and the remaining two are from Bandung,” PT KAI’s Operational Director Bambang Irawan said Thursday as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.
The additional cars will add the 198 unit cars currently in operation. Of the 24 additional cars, 12 will be economy cars, and the rest business class.
All of the additional cars will begin operating five days before the Islamic festival known locally as Lebaran, and will remain in service until 11 days after the holiday.
People can order economy tickets seven days prior to Lebaran, while business ticket can be ordered 40 days before the holiday at train stations, ATMs or travel agents.
“People can make a reservation wherever train tickets are available, because if they count on Gambir, there will not be enough to accommodate for the annual exodus passengers” Bambang said.
He said that during Lebaran train tickets would increase in price, citing the Argo Bromo Anggrek train serving the Gambir-Surabaya route as an example.
“The business-class ticket will be increased to Rp 550,000 [US$64.35] from the normal price of Rp 350,000”.
